Surfing in California

California offers some of the best surfing in the world.  In fact, outside of Hawaii, the continental United States can trace its surfing roots to the golden beaches of California, most within a 3 hours drive of Los Angeles close to many lodging options.  The golden Beach Blanket Bingo era of the 1960’s, the soulful long boarding era of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s and the radical competitive surfing era of the 1980’s and 1990’s all captured the imagination of many a young man or woman immersed in the surfing lifestyle.  Today you can find all types of surfers from all ages at most California surf breaks.  So come on and get “stoked” and grab your board and head for the waves.

Popular Surf Breaks

One of the most famous surf breaks in California is Malibu.  Rimmed with celebrity homes, Malibu is a popular destination for beachcombers and surfers hoping to glimpse a wayward actor or actress.  Following Malibu, the most notorious technical surfing break in California is likely Windansea.  Made famous by the book “Pump house Gang”, Windansea is a reef break with no beach.  Because it is a reef break the waves peel both left and right and when a swell hits southern California you will be able to watch some of the best area surfers at this break.  La Jolla Shores offers some of the best beginner surfing breaks in San Diego County.  Here at the Shores you will find miles of beautiful beach breaks.  Closer to Los Angeles, San Onofre also is a challenging beach break.

Surf Lessons and Board Rentals

California is the land of surf shops.  And they take credit cards!  You cannot visit a beach community and not drive by a surf shop.  These shops offer everything you need to take up surfing.  From surf boards, surf wax, surf trunks, surf magazines, surf clothes to surf music you can have a lot of fun taking time to go in and look around.   One of the best is Star Surfing Company in Pacific Beach.  This surf shop is just 2 blocks from Tourmaline Surfing Park.  The friendly folks at Star Surfing will fit you to a board that will work for you the first time you hit the waves.  Another great surf shop is Pacific beach Surf Shop.  This shop is somewhat larger and caters to more tourists but offers quality surf gear nonetheless.  Whether it’s a shop you have heard of or one that simply you drove by, checking out a local surf shop is part of the California experience.
